April 21, 2025 — The United States announced today the imposition of new tariffs on solar energy products imported from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, following a year-long trade investigation.

According to a final determination published by the U.S. Department of Commerce on Monday, anti-dumping duties on solar products from these Southeast Asian nations range from 6.1% to 271.28%, depending on the company and country of origin. Additionally, countervailing duties—intended to offset government subsidies—range from 14.64% to 3,403.96%.

The four countries currently supply approximately 77% of U.S. solar module imports, with solar equipment exports to the U.S. valued at $12.9 billion in 2024. The investigation, initiated under the Biden administration, was prompted by complaints from domestic solar manufacturers, who argued that Southeast Asian producers benefited unfairly from state subsidies and dumped products below production costs, harming the U.S. solar industry.

While U.S. manufacturers hailed the decision as a victory for domestic production, the tariffs are expected to raise costs for the renewable energy sector, which already faces economic headwinds and shifting policy priorities. The Trump administration has sought to bolster fossil fuel industries while scaling back support for green energy initiatives.

The move underscores ongoing tensions in U.S. trade and energy policy, balancing protectionism against the need for affordable clean energy transition. Further reactions from affected industries and international stakeholders are anticipated in the coming days.
